1st Australian Army Tank Battalion

The Role of Armour in the Australian Defence Force is defined as:

"The co-ordination with other arms, to close with and destroy the enemy forces using fire, manoeuvre and shock action."

The 1st Army Tank Battalion was a unit of the 3rd Army Tank Brigade (and later 4th Armoured Brigade), 3rd Armoured Division during the Second World War. It was formed in May 1941 and was disbanded in September 1945 at the end of hostilities. The regiment was formed originally from the 1st Light Horse (Machine Gun) Regiment which became the 1st Machine Gun Regiment in December 1941 and later the 1st Motor Regiment in March 1942. In May 1942, the regiment was transferred to the 3rd Army Tank Brigade and became the 1st Australian Army Tank Battalion.

It saw active service in New Guinea and Borneo against the Japanese.
