2nd Armoured Car Regiment


The Role of Armour in the Australian Defence Force is defined as:

"The co-ordination with other arms, to close with and destroy the enemy forces using fire, manoeuvre and shock action."

The 2nd Armoured Car Regiment was formed in Sydney, New South Wales in 1938 as a Citizen Military Force (CMF) unit and recruited from the Sydney metropolitan area. In May 1942, it became the 2nd Australian Army Tank Battalion.

The unit was a pre-Second World War militia unit which later became the 2nd Australian Tank Battalion, AIF, in the 3rd Australian Tank Brigade. Identified in this photograph is Major Samuel (Sam) Hordern seated 6th from the right of the second row. He served in the Second World War with the service number NX34918 later commanded C Squadron of the 1st Australian Tank Battalion, AIF. He was awarded an OBE in 1945 for "highly meritorious service at Sattelberg" in 1943. Circa 1940
