4th Cavalry Regiment

The history of THE FOURTH CAVALRY REGIMENT can be traced back to the Boer War through its affiliation with 2nd/14th Queensland Mounted Infantry.
On 12th August 1960 A Squadron 2/14 QMI. was raised in Puckapunyal, Victoria, and moved to Wacol, Queensland, in early 1961. The unit was raised as an anti-tank squadron and took part in all major field force exercises between 1961-65. In 1962/63 the unit was given the task of conducting trials on the British Trojan 432 and the American M113a1 vehicles. These trials were conducted at Mt. ISA and INNISFAIL over a period of 9 months.
In 1965 the role and the unit name was changed. A Squadron 2/14 QMI. became B Squadron 1st Cavalry Regiment and the anti-tank role changed to Cavalry. This new role came with the introduction into service of the M113A1 APC’s which the unit had tried and tested two years previously.
On 18th November 1966 the name of the Squadron was changed once again, this time to B Squadron 2nd Cavalry Regiment. During 1968 the unit became involved in civil emergency duties in the Killarney district where a cyclone had caused extensive damage. In 1969 the Squadron created history by being the first armoured unit to visit Townsville since World War 2.
On 11th October 1971 the unit name was changed to A Squadron 4th Cav Regiment. Since then A Squadron as been exercised throughout most of the state of Queensland including a 2000 mile trek on Exercise Birdsville Track. A Sqn. Has affiliations with the 3rd Sqn. 4th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. 25th Infantry Division based in HAWAII. In 1972 the Squadron hosted the 4 Quadripartite Conference on Armour and led the 6TF parade for General C. Westmoreland Chief of Staff, U.S. Army.
Activities in 1974 included extensive civil assistance in the Brisbane flood disaster and subsequent clean-up. Exercise “KANGAROO 1” in July 1974 were conducted with British and Malaysian Army units.
On 1st March 1975, RHQ, HQ Squadron and B Squadron were raised following approvals given in November 1973 and September 1974. THE FOURTH CAVALRY REGIMENT then commenced to operate as a complete Regiment, celebrating 11th October 1971 as its official birthday.
