Australian Light Horse Regiments - Pre Federation to World War Two

The Australian Light Horse were mounted infantry who served from Pre federation, during the Boer War and World War I. The Light Horse regiments became Militia units between the world wars and many then became motorised units during the Second World War.

The Light Horse differed from cavalry in that they usually fought dismounted, using their horses as transport to the battlefield and as a means of swift disengagement when retreating or retiring.
