With the end of the First War World, Australia's Light Horse regiments were mostly disbanded in 1919. The 1920s and 1930s saw the reformation of the Light Horse regiments as militia units, many of whom inherited battle honours and traditions from AIF and pre World War One Light Horse regiments. The South Australian Light Horse units were part of the 6th Cavalry Brigade between 1921 and 1942. This was raised in Adelaide, South Australia in 1921.
The Second World War saw many of these militia regiments either disbanded, formed into AIF motorised units or used in the defence of mainland Australia.
