Australian Tank Corps - Pre World War Two

Australia's armoured units were established during the 1930s with the creation of the Australian Tank Corps. It comprised two light tank companies. The 1st Tank Section, located at Randwick, NSW (which was to provide the basis for the 1st Light Tank Company) was raised in 1938 and later the 2nd Light Tank Company (Caulfield, Victoria) which was raised in March 1939.

They were equipped with eleven (11) Mark VIa Light Tanks which were purchased from Great Britain and allocated between the two units. A further order of 24 tanks was subsequently placed in Great Britain.
