South Vietnam December 1966 - 3 Troop A Squadron, 3 Cav

 


Phuoc Tuy Province, Vietnam, August 3rd 1968. APC Call sign 33 of A Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC), on fire after being hit by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG). The RPG had been fired at the vehicle by a Viet Cong (VC) patrol shortly after the start of Operation Pinnaroo. The blast had blown the driver of the APC, Lance-Corporal Paul ("Pommie") Atkinson, out of the driver's compartment, wounding him in the process. The APC's commander was Sergeant John Fogarty.

("Jock") Thompson, and at right the APC driver, Trooper (Tpr) R. G. ("Bob") Gillard. Tpr Gillard was later killed when the APC ran over a mine. The APC has been fitted with a T50 turret armed with twin 30 calibre machine guns.
